Instructions for connecting to your network drive

These instructions will walk you through how to connect your computer to a "network drive". In the computer labs on campus the network drive is mapped automatically as the "H:" drive.

Right click on the "My Computer" icon on the desktop, then left click "Map Network Drive"

Alternately, if you do not have a "My Computer" icon on the desktop you can click the "Start Button" then right click on the My Computer" icon.
Enter "\\darwin\username" (where username is your GCNet username) into the folder field. Be sure that you use backslashes ("\") and not forward slashes ("/") when typing the folder address. We recommend setting the drive field to "H:" because this is the letter used on campus for network drives. If you check the "Reconnect at logon" option the drive will be still be mapped every time you logon. Click "Finish" to connect the drive.
You should now see a logon screen. The logon information is the same as the information you use to logon to GCNet.
Your network drive should now be mapped to the letter you assigned it and should automatically display the contents of the mapped drive.
You can access the mapped drive from "My Computer" or though any method of opening or saving files. Your "My Documents" and "Desktop" folders are located within the "profile" directory of your network drive.

Your profile is the information that makes computing on campus identical as you go from one computer to another. DO NOT delete your profile directory or any directory containing profile information.

The "public" folder is your personal webspace and is located on GCNET. For more information about your personal webspace look at the information on "Creating your personal webpage at Greensboro College"
If your files are in your "My Documents" folder or on your "Desktop" you will first want to open the profile folder and access the files it contains.
Your "My Documents" and "Desktop" folders are now accessible. Just open the folder you wish to work with and you can now "drag and drop" or copy and paste files to and from your computer.
