GCNET (The Campus Network)

GCNET is the Greensboro College network and servers that provide faculty, staff and students with their own file share, web space and Windows XP profiles. File share space is a place on the server where you can save your documents, spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations, and other files. If your email address is jstudent@gborocollege.edu, then your file share (sometimes called your Darwin or GCNet) account username is jstudent. Your password is initially your student ID number but if you have changed it and cannot remember your password then you can contact the IT department to change it. To request help from IT, please use the form at Get Help! to request that we contact you or reset your password.

Accessing your files:

You can access your account from any computer that has network access (including off-campus). The program you use will be determined by where you are and what operating system you are using. If your are in one of the computer labs with Windows XP on the computers, you login using your account and password. If you are off-campus, you can access your account using FTP (File Transfer Protocol). FTP software is available for free and Mac users can use a version called Fetch. There are also ways to use FTP based connections from Microsoft programs. More information about GCNET and FTP can be found at GCNET and FTP. You can also access your files by visiting gcnetweb.gborocollege.edu (if you cannot log in try using a different browser like Mozilla's Firefox).

Creating your personal webpage at Greensboro College:

After you have accessed your files, you can establish a folder that can hold a publicly available website of your own by adding a folder named "public" under your account. You then must create an html webpage named index.html in that folder. Then, if a web browser is directed to http://www.gborocollege.edu/~jstudent the home page for jstudent will open in the browser. More information about how to construct your own web page can be found at Setting Up Your Own Web Page.

Changing your GCNET password:

From any computer, please go to http://darwin.gborocollege.edu/cgi-bin/changepassword.cgi to change your password. We recomend that you change your password at least once a semester. Changing your GCNET password will not change your Email password. For information regarding your email password please see the Pridemail section of the Infotech website. If you have questions about your account or password, please use the form at Get Help! to request that we contact you or reset your password.

Connecting to the network from your dorm room:

Wired access is available in all dorm rooms on campus. Each room has two connections that are usually housed within the same wall jack and most, if not all, network connections in dorm rooms are orange. To connect your computer to the network, plug one end of a network (Category 5/5e) cable into the wall jack and the other end into the network jack on your computer. Please do not mistake network connections in the rooms or on your computers with phone jacks. Phone jacks (typically either black or white) are smaller and plugging a phone cable into a network jack or a network cable into a phone jack may damage the wires inside the connector. The following pictures show the typical connections in a dorm room:

Network connections are typically orange and are installed with two connections in each wall jack.
The connections pictured here are for TV (top) and telephone (bottom). Phone connections are usually either black or white

Other information you should know about being on the network:

The infotech website provides some information on how to stay safe online and also how to avoid getting spamed at your gborocollege.edu email address. Also, under the GET SOFTWARE & TOOLS section you can find downloads for a FREE music downloading program provided through Greensboro College and also a FREE anti-virus program called "Sophos Antivirus."
